Thursday Review

Hi students,

Please leave me a comment below about any grammar, vocabulary, or conversation strategy topic that you would like to review tomorrow. We will spend approximately 60 minutes or so reviewing, so we don't have time for everything. Your comments will help me plan better for the time we have.

Thanks!

Your teacher,

Josh

I want to know when should we double the letter of the word or change y to ied. Like study-studied stay-stayed.

    1. Hi Chika,

Good question. We use expressions like "It sure does," "It sure is," and "They sure are/do" to show THAT WE AGREE with the person we are talking to. By showing that we agree, we indicate to the other person that we are a supportive, friendly listener. Also, we don't want to simply repeat, "I agree" over and over again. We want to use a variety of expressions.

If you look at the conversation on p. 26, the speakers both use expressions like the ones above to say that they agree. Here are some examples, followed by my explanation.

Juan: "Yeah, it really is." What he means is "Yeah, you are right. I agree with you. This place is incredible."

Kim: "It sure does." Kim means, "Yeah, I agree. It feels really good to be out of the city."

Juan: "They really are." Juan means, "You are right. I am also amazed by these trees."

I hope this helps. If it doesn't, we can talk Friday or Monday before the test.

      Good luck!

      Josh
